Built in 1924 at 640 S. Main Street in Los Angeles, the Cecil Hotel has a dark history of murders and suicides. Two serial killers rented a room at Hotel Cecil while active, Jack Unterweger also known as Jack the Writer, murdered his victims in at least four different countries, and Richard Ramirez best known as the Night Stalker, an American serial killer, burglar and sex offender that worshipped Satan. The building experienced such a large number of suicides that the locals began calling it Suicide Magnet. Many suicides were by jumping out of a window. In 1962 a woman named Pauline Otton died here after jumping out of a window, and actually killed an innocent pedestrian walking by when she landed on him. Self-inflicted gunshot is another popular method. Today the building is used to house approximately 600 in need of housing.
