FAST CAR

"I have a son that's 28," Tricia shared from the streets of Denver. "I've been homeless for ten years, but before that, when my son was 14, I taught him his first four chords on the guitar. In two months he was playing better than me."

Tricia played for me Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. I took this photo as she bolted out the lyrics. It was an incredibly moving experience, invoking feelings of admiration and sadness.

"Your son," I asked later, "how is he?"

"He's good - he has a college degree in chemistry."
